How it works

This calculator implements the rectangular stress-block method from AS3600:2018 Section 8 for reinforced concrete beams in bending and shear. In Check mode you supply the section geometry, concrete grade, and steel area, and it returns the design moment capacity (φMu) and shear capacity (φVu). In Design mode you enter the applied moment M* and optional shear V*, and it calculates the required tensile reinforcement area and shear ligature ratio.

What it calculates

Bending uses the equivalent stress-block factorsα2 and γ (Cl 8.1.3), neutral-axis depth, ductility check (ku 0.36), and minimum reinforcement check (Mu 1.2Mcr). The capacity reduction factor φ is taken as 0.85 for bending (Table 2.2.2).

Shear offers the simplified method (kv = 0.15, θv = 36°) and the general method (kv and θv from longitudinal strain εx per Cl 8.2.4.2). Both include web-crushing check (Vu.max), minimum shear reinforcement ratio, and required Asv/s. φ = 0.7 for shear.
